Narrative

I entered the U.S. Army Medical Department (AMEDD) in 1960, as a Medical Service Corps Officer, with the express purpose of successfully competing to attend the U.S. Army Baylor University Graduate Program in Health Administration. This proved to be a most valuable education opportunity and an experience which led to numerous professionally rewarding outcomes both during my Army career and especially subsequent to my retirement from the AMEDD in 1981. I feel fortunate to have been able to realize and achieve this long-standing dream as a young AMEDD officer.

I had the good fortune to be sponsored by the AMEDD to obtain the MHA through the Baylor program and the Dr.PH. from the University of Texas School of Public Health, at the Health Science Center, Houston during my military career. As a result of this sponsorship through the AMEDD, I was well-equipped to serve in AMEDD field units as well as at fixed facilities throughout the world. Additionally, the training obtained, courtesy of the AMEDD, has provided me with the opportunity and pleasure to serve our country at the highest level of government, to include a Presidential appointment as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs during the first Bush administration.
