Biography

Captain Paul Michael Hoffman, MSC, USN was born in August 1953 in Camden, New Jersey. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1979 from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois, a Master of Science (Management) degree in 1980 from Troy State University, Troy, Alabama, and a Master of Health Administration in 1994 from Baylor University, Waco, Texas.

Captain Hoffman entered the Navy in 1975 as a Seaman. Graduating from Hospital Corps “A” School as a Third Class Petty Officer, he was assigned as a general duty corpsman to the Branch Medical Clinic, Naval Air Facility, Andrews Air Force Base, Camp Springs, Maryland, where he was promoted to Petty Officer Second Class. Following completion of the Naval School of Health Sciences Advanced Laboratory Technician “C” School in 1977, he reported to the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland. In 1978 he transferred to the Staff at the Office of the Attending Physician to Congress, U.S. Capitol, Washington, D.C. He was advanced to Petty Officer First Class in January 1980.

Commissioned as an Ensign, Medical Service Corps in April 1980, Captain Hoffman completed Officer Indoctrination School, Newport, Rhode Island and reported to the Naval Aerospace Regional Medical Center, Pensacola, Florida as the Assistant Comptroller. In 1983, Captain Hoffman served Naval Hospital, Lemoore, California, as the Fiscal and Supply Officer and later as Director for Administration.

Captain Hoffman left active duty in 1986 to be the Assistant Director for Administration, San Joaquin Local Health District, Stockton, California. Returning to active duty in 1988, he reported as Comptroller/Director for Resources, Navy Environmental Health Center, Norfolk, Virginia. In 1992, Captain Hoffman was assigned to full-time duty under instruction as U.S. Army-Baylor University Graduate Program in Health Administration. In 1993, he reported to Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, Virginia, first as Administrative Resident, then Head, Personnel Management Department until July 1996, when he reported as Officer in Charge, Medical Treatment Facility, USNS COMFORT (T-AH 20). In 1999 Captain Hoffman was assigned to the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery as Head, Business Analysis Branch until his transfer to the National Naval Medical Center as Director for Resources and Comptroller in 2001. He reported to his current assignment as Deputy Comptroller, Navy Medicine in May 2003.

Captain Hoffman is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives and a member of the American Hospital Association. His awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (second award), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (second award) and the Navy Achievement Medal (second award).
