January/February, 2003. The 35th Reunion - "What New Do You Want To Do" was well attended with at least 100 classmates and more than 60 family members participating. Thanks from the Class particularly to Chairman Bruce Pacht and the "non-retired" former chairs Rob Kugler and Paul Killebrew for everything they did to make the weekend such a great success. The weekend started Friday morning with seminars on the new technologies in use on campus and a campus tour of the new facilities. At noon, the Class of 1967 Memorial Grove dedication at the DOC House on Occum Pond was stirring. Sam Ostrow led the program, joined by classmates who shared in reading the names of the deceased. Current legacy students Charles Light and Christiana Toomey, both '04's, were recognized in honor and memory of their fathers, Chris and John. The Memorial Grove "is us and about us - as individuals and as One - Dartmouth's Class of 1967." After lunch, 67's were given private tours of the Hood's outstanding Orozco exhibition, of the new Berry Library, and of the Rauner Special Collections library, the latter led by our Classmate and the curator of the Collection, Stan Brown. The dinner at the Skiway at the new McLane Lodge was perfectly set. The night was clear and cold with a full Hunter's moon lighting the way. A concert starring the "Aires" and those 67's who sang with this fabled group and the Glee Club was a true highlight of a glorious evening. During the class meeting Saturday morning, Sam Ostrow provided an Activity Report highlighting the numerous Class activities of the past year including the mini-reunions, creation of the Memorial Grove, and refurbishment of the Smoyer lounge. Jeff Zimmerman gave his last Treasurer's report. We are among the most solvent of classes thanks to his and Pamm's hard work for over three decades. Dave Lowenstein discussed the Alumni Fund: '67s raised in excess of $770K of the $24M overall in the 2002 Campaign. But, only 292 classmates participated, below our previous years; and this is of concern to the Class because participation in our activities is what creates its great spirit. Howard Sharfstein, Bequests and Trusts Chair, talked about planned giving. John Manaras highlighted some upcoming mini-reunions, including the 20th Annual Boston Dinner (all invited) January 26 2003. There is also a skiing mini-Reunion with 'D68 in March at Snowbird, and golf tournaments in Rhode Island and the West in the Fall. Mike Tucker and two students -- including Jenny Sharfstein, Howard's daughter -- discussed the Dartmouth Partners in Community Service (DPCS) program which our class joined in Fall, 2000. DPCS sponsors internships and mentors students in community service projects. Class officers elected to serve through the 40th reunion are: Sam Ostrow (president), Rob Kugler and Paul Killebrew (VPs), John Manaras, Andy Danver and Bob Burka (Regional VPs), Dave Mangelsdorff (secretary), Rick Geissinger (treasurer), Bob Span (newsletter), Bill Sjogren (webmaster), David Lowenstein (College Fund), Howard Sharfstein (Bequests and Trusts), and Bruce Pacht (40th reunion chair). The "What New Do You Want to Do" program started an exciting discussion that continued throughout the weekend. Dave Mangelsdorff presented on '67 class demographics (available at Superlinks on the Class Web Page (www.alum.dartmouth.org/classes/67/) which tells us where we are now. John Isaacs summarized the results of a 100 person class survey on what we think about many personal issues associates with our lives and times. Ralph David Samuel then shared some poetry in which many of us could identify our own lives. Win Johnson '67 (Dartmouth's recently retired VP Finance), Jim Gifford, and Ralph David Samuel then presented their recent experiences in approaching or thinking about retirement and changes in lifestyles. A lively discussion -- including many 67 wives -- ensued. The football team overcame the rain and sloppy conditions to defeat Holy Cross. After the game, Clem Page piped us to the Old Dartmouth Pine for which our class is responsible. A plaque from the Class marks the spot. The class dinner at Dowd's Inn in Lyme was a great conclusion. Jeff and Pamm Zimmerman were presented a lamp in thanks for their lighting the way as our Treasurer for 30 years. Reunion Chair Bruce Pacht was given a handsome clock for giving us all such a great time. Congratulations to Bruce Pacht and all who ensured the reunion's success; a great '67 time for all! Reunion attendees are requested to send copies of photos of the 35th and earlier reunions to me, for posting to the web site.
