January/February 2006. Robert H. Bell, the William R. Keenan, Jr., Professor of English at Williams College, recently joined with William Dowling ’66, of Rutgers University, to write the Reader’s Companion to ‘Infinite Jest.’ The book is designed to accompany D.F. Wallace’s 1996 novel. Both Bob and Bill received doctorates in English from Harvard. Bob is the Director of the Center for Effective Teaching at Williams, and has won several national awards for outstanding teaching. He publishes regularly in Commonweal and is host of The Book Show on Northeast Public Radio. Jonathan Feltner of Boston, Massachusetts is the First Assistant General Counsel, Trials Section for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Law Dept. Jon earned his JD from Boston Univ. Law School in 1979. A recent story described Jonathan’s experiences in Vietnam and how he met Carol Glackin (who became his wife). Earl Winters “Wynn” Mabry was inducted into the Enid, Oklahoma Public School Foundation Hall of Fame. Wynn is director of Mecklenburg County Health Department in Charlotte, North Carolina and the county’s homeland security director. He made a career in the Air Force, retiring as a major general and commander of Wilford Hall Medical Center. He then served as medical director at Zayed Military Hospital in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates before going to Charlotte. In August I went to Washington, D.C. to chair a symposium at the American Psychological Association. Got together with Wayne C. Beyer, who is an administrative appeals judge for the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington, D.C. In addition to his legal work, Wayne remains active writing. We talked about our classmate, James Van Amburg, with whom we studied English literature at Oxford University during 1966. In July, Jim died of a cerebral hemorrhage. Jim graduated with honors in English and was a Rufus Choate Scholar at College. He received his Doctorate in Education from Stanford University. He served as the previous alumni class secretary. Jack Harris, Bill Yaggy, and Sam Ostrow attended the memorial service in White Plains, New York. Over 400 people came to celebrate Jim's remarkable career as an educator, most recently as Head at the Windward School, a specialized school for children with learning disabilities. Jim's son, Nick '99 gave a wonderful, funny touching reminiscence of Jim. Jim's wife, Penny, expressed her appreciation to the Class for how much Jim was always a part of us, and Jim's colleagues at the school all observed how he made sure that every room in the school was in some way painted in Dartmouth Green. Jim was well loved. Our sympathies to the Van Amburg family. Dave Mangelsdorff (3410 Turtle Village Drive, San Antonio, Texas 78230-3918) e-mail to dmangels@txdirect.net 210-344-0942
