July/August 2006. Bob Burka wrote of his China trip with Maria, which included a cruise up the Yangtze River, where they met Jane and Bob Hayes '55. The wives ascertained the (important) Dartmouth connection. Bob goes on to say all is well. Daughter Jennifer '01 graduated from Georgetown law school in May; Michael works for a hedge fund in Greenwich; and Jackie is a Director at Merrill Lynch. Maria is program director at the National Science Foundation. Bob is a partner at the Foley & Lardner LLP law firm in Washington, DC. They recently purchased a house in Fairlee, Vermont. James C. Grotta is the Roy M. and Phyllis Gough Huffington Distinguished Professor of Neurology at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston, Texas. The National American Heart Association presented him the association's Physician of the Year Award. Grotta, a stroke specialist, was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the accomplishments of the American Heart Association mission. Jim and his Stroke Team are recognized nationally. He joined the University of Texas Medical School at Houston in 1979, and has emerged as an international leader in stroke, both as a recognized “best doctor” in the United States and as a leading researcher. Bob Koury '65 is looking to interview fellow alum Marines who served in Vietnam. While he is particularly interested in fellow alums who volunteered and served in the Marines, those who served in other branches are of interest as well. Bob's email is robert@koury.com. Regret to say have two deaths to report, those of John Nunley and Brian Becker. John W. Nunley of Westborough, Massachusetts, died at home of brain cancer in December. John's memorial service was led by the Rev. Tim Stein '69. Attending were Jack Nevison '66, Chris Nevison '67, and Michael Chu '68 (who sent details on his roommate). John worked in the investing arm of the State Mutual Life Insurance Company, part of All-America in Worcester, Massachusetts, until 2004 when he took early retirement. John was an avid bicyclist. W. Thomas Fagan of Honolulu, Hawaii wrote that his former roommate, Brian Becker of Annapolis, Maryland died in February while on business in Las Vegas. During his 34-year career in direct marketing services, Brian was a senior executive at firms such as Donnelly Marketing, ADVO Inc., Decision Base Resources, Claritas Corp, and Touchpoint. Brian was a passionate champion of civil liberties and environmental concerns. In addition to Tom Fagan, '67 classmates Tom Walsh of Evanston, Illinois, Sam Robertson of Cincinnati, and Bill Lamb of Annapolis attended Brian's memorial service.
