Bill Eggeling is a litigation partner who divides his time between Ropes & Gray's Boston and Providence offices. His practice has spanned a broad spectrum of complex civil and criminal litigation matters, which, in addition to numerous breach of contract and products liability defense efforts, has included antitrust defense and prosecution, patent infringement and ownership litigations, enforcement of and defense against alleged misappropriations of trade secrets, and the successful assertion and defense of varied copyright and trademark claims. For much of the last decade, Bill's time was concentrated upon defending various civil and criminal claims arising against clients in the financial services industry and led a large scale, combined civil and criminal investigation and defense efforts on behalf of a major bank and its present and former officers and directors, which involved grand jury and attorney general investigations in at least eight states and federal districts, and spawned counterpart civil actions against the Bank and its present and former officers and directors, including claims ranging from negligent lending to securities fraud. These efforts, which ended favorably for our clients, produced over a score of trials, in many of which Bill served as lead counsel. He was also involved during much of the same period in representing former officers and directors of several financial institutions which failed as a result of the closure of state-created deposit insurance facility, leading to claims for supposed negligence and misfeasance in failing to predict and avert this financial crisis. More recently, Bill has been involved in successfully defending our clients against claims varying from copyright, trademark and trade secret misappropriation, to federal securities' law fraud.

Bill is a graduate of Dartmouth College and Boston University School of Law, magna cum laude. Before joining Ropes & Gray, he served as a law clerk for the Honorable Levin H. Campbell on the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, and in the same capacity for the Honorable William H. Rehnquist on the Supreme Court of the United States.
