Fletcher Allen Health Care is creating a statewide network of clinical laboratories from nearly a dozen local community hospitals and physicians' group practices. Saint Michael's College Prevel School in Colchester has introduced a graduate certificate program in information technology. Students shape the program to serve a business or education focus to match their profession. Dakin Farm, a Vermont specialty food company based in Ferrisburgh, has opened a retail store at 100 Dorset St., South Burlington. The store is open seven days a week. Finard & Co. of Burlington, owner of University Mall in South Burlington, has announced that Victoria's Secret and Bath & Body Works, divisions of Limited Inc. of Ohio, have joined the more than 80 national retailers at the mall. Spencer Newman has opened Adventurous Traveler Bookstore at 245 South Champlain St., Burlington. The store offers more than 5,000 travel and adventure titles in the form of books, maps, videos and CD-ROMs. Newman has operated the Adventurous Traveler Bookstore as a mail-order and Internet-sales business since 1994. The home-based business employs 10 full-time and three part-time people with annual sales of more than $1 million. Newman recently acquired the rare and out-of-print collection of adventure books from Greg Glade and Top of the World Books of Williston. The retail sales location houses this collection. John Nichols, president and CEO of Champlain Valley Telecasting, has announced that WFFF-TV (Fox 44) became the fourth major broadcasting network affiliate serving Burlington, Vt./Plattsburgh, N.Y., the nation's 91st-largest television market, with its Aug. 31 broadcast of Fox's first regular-season National Football League game. WFFF-TV will carry Fox's entire line-up of prime-time series, morning and afternoon programs and weekend Fox news and sports telecasts. Fox 44 is programmed by Heritage Media Corp. Inc., which also owns and operates the NBC affiliate WPTZ-TV. The local CBS affiliate, WCAX, which had a secondary affiliation with Fox, ceased broadcasting Fox Sports programming Aug. 9 and FKN programming on Sept. 6. Fox's prime time series had been telecast into the Burlington market via the FOX NET Cable programming service. (9/97)

Valerie Rittershausen and Cal King have announced the opening of Piece of Cake at 26 Susie Wilson Road in Essex Junction. The shop sells fresh, creative cakes made to order. Piece of Cake will also be a teaching center for decorating techniques. The mother (King) and daughter team have been creating custom cakes for customers for more than 20 years. Robert Skiff, Ph.D., former president of Champlain College, has announced the formation of Vermont Commons School, a private, co-educational junior/senior high school to be located in the Burlington area. Applications are being accepted for a planned opening date of September 1997. Initial enrollment will be limited to 60 students, with future enrollment growing to no more than 120. The 150-seat restaurant specializes in Chicago-style, deep-dish pizzas, but also serves a full complement of entrees, salads, soups and sandwiches. Tom Meaker, O.D., has opened Waterbury EyeCare Center in the Dascomb Rowe house, at 31 N. Main St., Waterbury. The office is staffed full-time by optician Karen Ratkovits, and is open five days a week. Meaker sees patients Tuesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Thursdays from 1:30 to 5 p.m. The building was recently restored by Lance E. Johnson of Round Table Construction in Waterbury. Epic Multimedia Inc. in South Burlington has launched Epic CarShows, an interactive vehicle information system for auto dealer showrooms. The kiosk system allows customers to search a dealer's car lot using a touchscreen monitor, which displays photos of vehicles, descriptions, features and pricing. The system can also print out the data. CarShows are in operation at Willie Racine's Jeep-Eagle-Isuzu, South Burlington; Twin City Subaru, Montpelier; and Foster Motors Chrysler-Plymouth-Dodge-Jeep-Eagle, Middlebury. (1/97)

Owner Steve Polcek has announced that Gallagher's in Waitsfield offers two beers from its new microbrewery. Partnering with One World Brewing, a Williston brewpub service firm, Gallagher's sells Sugarbush Ale, an old-style ale, and Mad River Stout, a dark brew. (1/97)

KoBel International in Milton has developed MVP (Most Versatile Phonecards), a new line of multi-layered, prepaid phone cards, as an alternative to conventional plastic cards for promotions, premiums and retail sale. The peel-apart cards are made from two or more layers of tag stock laminated together with dry-strippable adhesive. The multiple surfaces provide extra space for multilingual dialing instructions, product information, coupons and the like. Each card contains a PIN number hidden inside with bar code imaging available on the back for fulfillment control. (1/97)

MediaVision has added audio CD and CD-ROM "one-off" capabilities to its list of media replication services. One-offs are small quantity/short run, expedited CDs. The Shelburne firm uses Image Maker by Microtech Conversion Systems to create them.
