At the April 2010 Reunion, John Smith gave me a copy of his mailing list.
I have attempted to reconsile my lists with his, which has moved many names to the Status Unknown list.

Not a web site, but located here - Fred Greguras (a Vietnam Veteran Marine) has visited Shanghai 5 times since October 2006, and is tracking down some of the Old China Marines Shanghai haunts. Fred sent an MS Word Document (31DEC06, which I posted with his permission) for you to download, study (most recent Update#06, 14NOV07, see footnotes at bottom of each page, and resource list at end of text, for additional information), and comment upon back to Fred. If you have an old map of the place, or wish to share personal knowledge or insights, he'd like to hear from you. Fred also provided (25FEB07) a copy of the Fourth U.S. Marine Telephone Directory - May 1940 in PDF format.

Web Sites with Stories and Pictures
about The Old 4th Marines:
Sort of new (highly recommended by The QUAN) -- US-Japan Dialogue on POWs -- a Bilingual website to aid the Japanese in understanding the plight of former POWs.
  1. David George (Pete George's Son) -- China Marines, well done, with many good pictures (even a replica of Old Blue, a series of Shanghai, and a series of/by Louis E. "Peep Sight" Duncun).
  2. Marines in China before World. War Two:
  3. History of U.S. Marine Corps Operations in World War II -- Vol. I: Pearl Harbor to Guadalcanal, you will want to read all of Part IV -- The Marines in the Philippines. It is extensive and has many pictures and maps.
  4. The Corregidor Historical Society -- Corregidor - THEN and NOW -- well done, and extensive (maps, stories, pictures and links).
  5. Wes Injerd's Web Site -- Fukuoka, Japan, Prisoner of War Camp #1, and a great deal more.
  6. Hell Ships --
  7. The Marine Corps Legacy Museum - These folks are still looking for a few good Marines (from the Old 4th) to help them with an oral history project.
  8. Roger Mansell's Web Site -- Allied POWS under the Japanese in World War II
Please, don't let Your Personal Story be lost. If you can not type, tell it to a son or daughter (grand son, grand daughter, friend, someone) and have them type it up. If they can post it to the web, I'll link to it. If they can't post it on the web, I'll either make room for it here, or we will get it posted on the ADBC site.
We still need one (or more) of the Cavite / Olongapo / Mariveles Marines to write up (publish) their unit histories (whatever is known about them before being absorbed into the 4th Marines). There is more information available concerning the 4th Battalion, 4th Marines (April 9 - May 6, 1942), than the Marines in the Philippines in the 1930's.

Rules Of Engagement

I am a Life Member of the American Ex-Prisoners of War (Card #37665, next-of-kin). I am also an Associate Life Member of the American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor (Card #7050). I am not a member of the 4th Marines Chapter, because the original members have chosen not to have associate/next of kin members (they remain a last man standing organization).

I was in the process of putting my Dad's stuff together in late 2000, to put up on the web. Then in January 2001 a letter from Pat Hitchcock told us about David George's (Pete George's Son) China Marine site, and asked if anyone out there would put up something about the other USMC units that were absorbed into the 4th Marines after they arrived in the Philippines. I decided to take Pat's challange, along with posting my Dad's stuff.

There is very little published about the history of the Marines units stationed in the Philippines between 1924 and 1941. I am trying to collect/draw together as much as I can, but you guy's were there. You guy's experienced it. If you will share it with me, I will share it with the world. ~ Jack Turner

This is an UnOfficial Marine Corps Brat Site, 'cause my Mom says I wasn't a Brat.
