The 4th Battalion, 4th Marines was created (between 9-12 April, and disappeared at the time of the Surrender) using supernumerary Army Air Force and Naval personnel (72 officers and 1,173 enlisted men, mostly Army Air Corps, who had escaped from Bataan).

1 Marine officer and 5 Marine NCO's formed the main BN HQ element. Service company was draw upon to provide the Marines sent to form up and lead the 4th Battalion. Along with Maj Williams were the following NCO's: Carl Downing, Edward McCormick, Kenneth Mize, Charles Thomas and Pierce Wardlow.

The Army officers and men (many dislocated Army Air Corps) formed up Companies "Q" and "R".

The Navy officers and men formed up Companies "S" and "T", many from the USS CANOPUS AS-9 (web site Skippered by Everett M. Perry). Others of the CANOPUS' crew were attached to existing elements of the 4th Marines. Some remained on Bataan. Some came over from Bataan shortly before/after its fall. I'm letting their decendents fill in the blanks for them.

No Muster Roll was found in USMC records, however, they may exist in Army and Navy archives. The names listed were provided to Dad sometime in the late 1970's or early 1980's. I do not know the source, and he does not remember, just former POWs talking at reunions.

I regrate my records for 4/4 are far from complete.

4/4's short existence has caused consternation, confusion and contention from its founding, to this very day. I find it to be one of those great anomalies of military history which should be celebrated and preserved.
