About the LISTS

The lists of Marine Corps and Navy names on this site are based upon the Official USMC Muster Rolls, from 01 December 1941 through 30 April 1942, of the 4th Marines. The Muster Rolls were provided to my father in 1980-81, through the Freedom of Information Act, while he was researching the 4th Marines records in the National Archives.

Events after 30 April 1942 have been collected from members at Reunions (Killed In Action, Died Of Wounds, Died In Camps, Died On Hell Ships), and matched against what few Official records can be found. The Repatriated Deceased and Survivor lists are update as we receive announcements.

Site Updates

The Reunion News Page gets updated as information becomes available from Pat Hitchcock or Martin Christie.

The Reunion Pictures Page gets updated during or shortly after a reunion. Although, if folks want to send me pictures from past reunions I'll digitize and post as many as I have space to get away with (and I do return your originals).

The Personal Stories and Small Unit Histories are updated when someone either posts one and I find it, or they send it to me for posting.

Unless something urgent, or at least pretty darn important comes up, updates, changes and corrections will be posted on the 1st day of each month from now on. Something has come up (9-11-01), so everything is catch as catch can until my current crop of students has a chance to settle down.

PROJECT PLACED ON HOLD - My next project (and it is already turning out to be bigger than I had estimated) is to publish the April 30, 1942 Muster Rolls of the entire 4th Marines. But first, I will be spending some time placing the Muster Rolls (December 1941- April 1942) into a safe (achievable) set of notebooks. My dad spent several months in Washington, D.C., back in 1977 and 1978, locating them in the National Archives and paid to have the photostats made (he also collected several 3 inch binders full of records and reports dating from late November to late April -- don't even ask, that's a project for next year). His storage method was not the best, so I'm doing some repair along with preservation. All the lists posted on the site will be changed to reflect any and all differences between existing lists (held by anyone) and the actual OFFICIAL MUSTER ROLLS.

PROJECT UPDATE 26 July 2003 - The US National Archives & Records Administration has posted the computer punch cards for all Pacific POWs on the web. I no longer see a need for me to try and duplicate their work, and so will only be maintaining the lists I already have up.

Any personal notes or commentary I might put into the 4th Marines pages are always in this color text ("teal"). ~ Jack Turner, Webmaster
